FAQ Deck Builder Questions

WHAT IS THE BEST COMPOSITE DECKING?

The best composite decking consists of Trex, Timbertech (Azek), and Fiberon. Trex offers one of the largest selections of outdoor composite lumber and products of any manufacturer and has some of the least expensive options, too. TimberTech offers surface decking, railing, porch, trim, molding components, lighting, and hardware accessories. Fiberon has surface decking, railing components, and fencing products that feature a solid PVC “Permatech” outer shell bonded to a wood composite core.

CAN YOU PAINT COMPOSITE DECKING?

The immediate answer is yes, but it only applies if you have early-generation composite material. The newest versions of composite decking are pretty much protected by a shell or PVC cap. This encases the composite core as a whole. The cap does allow for decking to be low maintenance, however, it will prevent the paint and stain from bonding. You may want to think twice about painting your composite deck to avoid voiding the warranty.

DO YOU NEED A PERMIT TO BUILD A DECK?

Yes! Acquiring a deck permit is one of the most important steps in the deck building process and should be completed way ahead of time. Different cities have different zoning laws, so ask your local deck builders as many questions as you can. A zoning official will give the “go-ahead” for the deck to be built and then pass those plans off to the plan examiner, making sure everything is structurally intact.

HOW MUCH VALUE DOES A DECK ADD TO A HOUSE?

The immediate answer is yes, it most certainly adds value. The long term answer would be that it depends on the materials used, your enjoyment of the deck and the plans you may have for the future. A deck can recoup nearly three-fourths of its cost, which all depends of deck design, materials and labor costs. A deck addition is in fact a top 10 outdoor home improvement.

WHAT IS THE BEST DECK COVER FOR A DECK?

A Louvered roof pergola. It works by opening and closing the roof louvers with a button or app. It delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck, swimming pool, hot tub and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm.

WHAT IS A RETRACTABLE SCREEN DOOR?

They are high-quality mesh screens that can be controlled with a button. With the click of a button, your screens conveniently roll down to provide comfort and protection. When not in use, they simply roll up out of view. If you have a fireplace or heaters in your outdoor area, retractable screens create a room that retains the heat, blocks the wind, and keep those bugs out.
